Big questions

Some people find mathematics boring. That’s insane! Mathematics is awesome.

As mathematics teachers, its our job to help pupils to experience the fascinating weirdness and power of the subject. Big questions (about the world around us, the technology we use, and what we are doing on this planet) help us mathematics teachers do our job, and help pupils to see the relevance of everyday topics in secondary school mathematics.

For example: we can ask pupils are you living in a computer simulation? to introduce the topic of probability.

So this is a request for your collective ingenuity. What are the big questions that you love asking, and that you use mathematics to answer? Please add them to this Google document and please feel free to use any of the big questions and resources already there.

Thank you!
